Our journey to self sufficiency is slow and steady.. We just moved to our new home in March and have since added quail, cucumbers, herbs, zucchini, apple trees, blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries. Hopefully in five years or so we will be rolling in the berries! But for now we only produce enough fresh veggies to supplement our dinners a few times a week.
I like knowing where my food comes from and I love a good deal. Farmers markets provide the best of both worlds. Reasonable prices for superior quality food that didn’t travel thousands of miles to get to your plate…
Today we got a small load of cucumbers, tomatoes and jalapeños. Quail egg omlets coming soon! We got to talk to each of the farmers and learn the processes they use with their produce. We will most certainly be returning!
Although I was in need of fresh veggies, I also had some other motives for getting up at 6 am on a Saturday to be ready for the farmer’s market. I have an over abundance of quail eggs and am hoping to be able to sell them at the farmer’s market next year along with some salve, lip balm and homemade teas. Not surprisingly, no one there sold quail eggs! We will have the corner of the market, quite literally, for people wanting miniature eggs.
Happy Saturday to everyone! Get out to your local market!
